The Top 5 Reasons We All Need a Yorkie in Our Life

Yorkshire Terriers are one of the most well-known dog breeds on the planet. They are also the most popular toy dog breed. As professional, AKC licensed breeders of Yorkie, Morkie, and Maltese puppies, we have the wonderful privilege of spending our days playing and socializing these wonderful little creatures.

Here is a list of 5 things you probably DIDN'T know about Yorkie puppies!

1. Yorkies are rat killers.

Business owners in Scotland originally bred the dogs to get rid of rats in their places of business.

2. A Yorkie was the first therapy dog.

Smokey was a Yorkshire Terrier that helped soldiers out during World War 2, and toured hospitals where she would cheer up wounded soldiers. Smokey ended up doing a tour in Hollywood, appearing in films and variety shows.

3. A Yorkie was the smallest dog EVER.

Sylvia was a Yorkshire Terrier that weighed only four ounces and was just 2.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches long when she was full grown! Sadly, Sylvia died just after her second birthday — but she lived a great life for such a small doggo.

4. Richard Nixon had a Yorkie in the White House.

Pasha was one of three dogs in the Nixon White House.

5. Yorkies can sneeze backwards!

That's right! Yorkies are prone to something called a "pharyngeal gag reflex," which means they can actually sneeze backwards. This can scare some dog owners, but is actually completely harmless!

Yorkies are one of the most reliable breeds in the world and there is so much to learn about these amazing dogs. They’ll steal your heart, if you let them! If you would like to talk about making one of our puppies an addition to your family, please give us a call at 352-220-0351. We would love to talk with you, and have you come in to meet our puppies, and our family!
